Job Summary
A staff occupational therapist is a professionally trained individual whose primary responsibilities include the evaluation, treatment, monitoring, and proper documentation of a patient’s condition. She/He promotes and maintains communication with patients, families, physicians, staff and other rehabilitation personnel. In addition to patient care responsibilities, the occupational therapist is also responsible for administrative, organizational, and supervisory duties. The staff therapist assumes the responsibilities of director in their absence.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Graduation from an accredited school of occupational therapy. Must be licensed in or eligible for licensure by the Kentucky board of occupational therapy.
- Job Relationships: The staff occupational therapist is responsible for the supervision, motivation, general conduct, and performance of the occupational therapist assistant, occupational therapy technician, office manager, office assistant, and affiliating students. The staff therapist reports primarily to the clinic director. In addition, they are responsible for performing evaluations, setting up the plan of treatment, supervising treatment care, and handling the management care of the patient by contacting doctors, rehabilitation nurses, and managed care groups.
- Job Knowledge: The occupational therapist must display expertise in the practices, principles and responsibilities of the adherence to the code of ethics of the AOTA, Kentucky State Occupational Therapy Practice Act, and state licensure regulations. Verify insurance coverage for patients as directed, maintain authorizations and plans of care for continuing treatment. Collect patient copays.
Physical Demand:
- The job requires a considerable amount of walking, squatting, pulling, pushing, carrying, and lifting when handling patients and/or equipment. The utilization of proper body mechanics is necessary to prevent injury. Although some sitting is necessary foradministrative work, most of the time is spent on the feet. The employee must be able to maintain balance in the upright position. The physical demands are listed as a medium PDL as referred in the DOT. (20 – 50 pounds safely).
